Re: Lt. Archilles Garrard Ballinger

Lt Achilles Ballinger's daughter (Sarah Levitia)who was not yet born when he was killed was my great grandmother. Just recently I had a great Aunt pass away and left behind some family history papers she had collected. In her papers, she says the story of Achilles being killed while on his way home to see his baby daughter was proven to be untrue. She states that this story was told by a granddaughter named Hattie Neil. My great Aunt wrote "Achilles Garrard Ballinger was in the Civil War, was a Lieut. and Doctor. He was killed at Honey Springs Depot Battle 17, July 1863. He was in the confederate Army and the dead (some 150 on the day of 17 July) were buried in what was known as a common grave or a trench no stones were put up. The burying ground is on a hillside just Southeast of the Main Spring. He was in the Second Cherokee Regiment." Achilles wife, Olive Mary Keith had two brothers who also were in the Battle of Honey Springs, they survived. I believe they told the correct story of how Achilles was killed at Honey Springs. My E-Mail address is BillDonnaMoore@aol.com if any relative of Achilles would care to exchange family history or have any pictures to share. I have a picture of Sarah Levitia and her husband Barton Mortimer Roberts.
