Regarding Hindman, I am particularly interested in his visit to Tahlequah -- don't remember the dates but perhaps you do. Otherwise will have to look it up.
My long time obsession is finding more primary source material on Phillips Feb 1864 Expedition. I am convinced that the battle of Middle Boggy did not occur near Atoka but was far northwest in the vicinity of the community of Stonewall. I'm also trying to find some reliable info on Brown with the 14th KS Cavalry coming from Ft Smith to or toward North Fork Town. I beleive Willett's Battalion of the 14th was already and Ft Gibson and was the advance -- being the mounted force of Phillips Expedition -- from Ft Gibson to Hillabee to the mouth of Little River (Ft Holmes/Edwards Trading Post). Phillips sent a company to North Fork Town and setup corn cribs for Moonlight with the balance of the 14th to come from Ft Smith. Moonlight was reassigned, Brown led the 14th out of Ft Smith, BUT Phillips says they never showed at North Fork Town and he never heard from them. Brown was recalled to Ft Smith. At question is whether there was a skirmish on the Texas Road near Middle Boggy (Atoka) and what troops were engaged. Was it a scout from Brown with the balance of the 14th? I don't think if was Willett's or any part of Phillips command -- they were in the Chickasaw Nation. Local lore includes stories of one or more skirmishes near Middle Boggy and even closer to Boggy Depot but nothing in the ORs even hints at these engagements.
Anyway, that was way off on a tangent but I keep bring it up with the hope that folks will run across clues to add to what I have collected. I'm hoping webmaster Jim will get up to Austin soon and can provide info from the S.B. Maxey Papers there. I have copies of what Gilcrease has but it is only a small portion of his papers.
