Roger,
I'd bet a dollar you are speaking of Imogene "Jean" Vann who was my mother's maid-of-honor in 1942. I live in Bartlesville but have family in and around Muskogee where both my grandparents lived and all my aunts and uncles grew up.

I'll look for the sources you mentioned. I also have copies of a journal that mentions movement between Webbers Falls and Ft Gibson along the south side of the river on a road that seems would skirt the more rugged terrain but generally stay close to the river. I have copies from the Stephan Foreman diary which mentions going from Creek Agency to Webbers Falls to visit Watie's camp in 1862 which may have followed this route.

My guess is that Watie's camp was closer to the river than the Texas Road crossing. I assume Cooper's mention of pickets at Coody Creek prior to the Honey Springs battle refers to the Texas Road crossing. However, if there was only one ford, perhaps these are one in the same at the crossing and then split with the Texas Road going to Honey Springs and the other fork to Webbers Falls.

Do you know the location of the Frozen Rock house? Carolyn Foreman's article on Ella Robinson says it had recently burned. I have some Crittenden relatives buried in the Frozen Rock Cemetery. I believe their allotments were nearby. I know the general vicinity of Rabbit Ford and Frozen Rock but would like to know more precisely where they were located. Do you know of photos of the river in this vicinity prior to the navigation system? It's hard to imagine what it looked like before.

Have you ever heard of Grindstone Mountain? "A soldier in the 29th" Texas Cav mentions it in a letter to the Clarksville Standard newspaper. The only 'mountains' I can think of that might resemble a grindstone are where the school for the blind is (isn't that called Panther Point or something similar?) or in the Gooseneck Bend. I believe it says the could seen the tents at Ft Gibson from there. Of course another possiblity is that there was a grindstone at/near there -- perhaps livestock powered.

I'll email you or you can email me at martikw@history-sites.com. I may have some pictures you'd find of interest to Muskogee history.

Ken
