Re: Bass' 20th TX Cav - Feb 1864

While it is possible some number of the 20th Texas Cav obtained mounts and joined with the Seminole or Chickasaw Battalions for the Battle of Middle Boggy, there are no records that indicate that occurred. All statements placing them there come from the assumption that the "Texans" referred to in Phillips' report were of Bass' 20th Texas Cav. Confederate reports mention only the Seminole Battalion and Nail's Company of the Chickasaw Battalion, which as you know contained Choctaw and Texans. The first I find of the 'story' about the Battle of Middle Boggy is about the time of the Civil War Centennial when, based on Phillips' report that the enemy was "Seminole, Choctaw, and Texans" and on the Confederate mention of "Nail's Company", erroneous assumptions were made, perpetuated, and embellished.
