Re: Bass' 20th TX Cav - Feb 1864

Ken Martin's detailed research and articulate blogs have finally convinced me that the 20th Texas Cavalry (dismounted) was not at the "Battle of Middle Boggy." His Fold3.com citations, describing the dates of Col. T. C. Bass's resignation from command of the 20th Texas at Boggy Depot (on 2-10-64) together with the support of the request by the Division Surgeon (on 2-14-64), are most informative. When taken together with several other documented events regarding the status of the 20th Texas and BG Cooper's writings of the time (around the Grand Council and at Boggy Depot), I am now convinced that only Capt. Jonathan Nails Company of the Chickasaw Battalion and perhaps half of Lt. Col. John Jumper's Seminole Battalion had arrived at Middle Boggy (4 miles south by southwest of Allen, OK) by the time the battle with the 14th Kansas Cavalry began about sunrise on Saturday morning, February 13, 1864. The 20th Texas's request to be remounted was also denied in March 1864, and they were reorganized into four "infantry" companies (A, B, C, & D) under Major John R. Johnston and ordered to serve separate garrison duties at Boggy Depot (A), Doaksville / Ft. Towson (B), and Ft. Washita (C & D).

I also believe that BG Cooper (at Boggy Depot) did not know of Phillips invasion across the South Canadian at old Ft. Holmes until Capt. Nails (command) delivered a report of the battle to Cooper at Boggy Depot during the late evening following the battle. There is evidence to suggest that some of Cooper's staff were with him at the Grand Council (at Armstrong Academy from 2-1 to 2-10), perhaps including his Division Surgeon, and that some (including Cooper) did not return directly to Boggy Depot on leaving the meeting. (The reasons this is important are (1) it shows that Cooper, on leaving the big meeting, was now in a "weekend" mode and knew of no northern threat, otherwise, he would have informed Maxey and rushed back to Boggy Depot; and (2) Col. D. N. McIntosh, commanding the Creek 1st Regiment, had just past Boggy Depot (about 2-9) on his way down to the Grand Council (albeit a bit late) when he heard about large Federal raids occurring back in his Creek Nation. McIntosh seems to have returned to Boggy Depot and waited for Cooper to return. It is not clear what and when Cooper heard about the Federal raids into the Creek Nation from McIntosh, nor how he interpreted his verbal report. McIntosh certainly did not know about Phillip's crossing of the South Canadian on the Dragoon Trail headed toward Middle Boggy. Official Records of Cooper's subsequent dispatches from Boggy Depot on the late evening of 2-13 and morning of 2-15 to BG McCulloch at Bonham, Texas, indicate that BG Cooper was surprised and not prepared for Phillip's attack down the Dragoon Trail toward Ft. Washita.
