Thanks for the additional information. With a last name like Smith, we would almost have to assume that several men share the same name. Since the resident of Carroll County KY was advanced in years (and at fifty-six Travis smith had outlived most of his peers), a different man must have belonged to Lillard's Scouts.

People frequently assume that young boys and old men served alongside soldiers without enlisting. Being a civilian scout may seem reasonable, but if this was true (and I don't believe for a moment that it was), Travis Smith would have been hung or shot as a guerrilla if captured by the Federal army.

It's unlikely that this man was ever a soldier during the Civil War.
