According to my best info he was the ONLY Travis Archie Smith in Carroll county in 1880 and in 1860(according to census info). If you think he was too old to serve as a "spy", he was not but 3 years older than Robert E. Lee. I have tried to find another man of the same name in the same county to no avail, so I a not totally convinced that he did not serve - what else was the Pension granted for? Many questions remain, but the search continues...
