Does anyone know what was happening at Monroe, Louisiana in early July, 1862, regarding Federal troops that needed to be confronted by the Confederates?

I have copies of two letters from the vertical files of the Confederate Research Center in Hillsboro, Texas, written by soldiers of the cavalry brigade formed by George Washington Carter at Hempstead, Texas, (First, Second, and Third Texas Lancers, later re-named the 21st Texas Cavalry, and 24th and 25th Texas Cavalries, Dismounted), while they were on the march from Texas to Arkansas in 1862.

Both letters mention that several hundred soldiers of the brigade had been sent from Shreveport to meet the enemy at Monroe.

This would have been before these troops were dismounted, which occurred at the end of July in Arkansas. (And of course, the 21st was re-mounted and attached to Parsons, while the 24th and 25th were attached to Garland's as dismounted cavalry.)

Were there any skirmishes as a result of this troop movement to Monroe?

“...five hundred of our regiment left yesterday for Monroe a place whare they expected to meet Federals our company will leave in a few days...”
