The Louisiana in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Monroe, Louisiana, federal troops July, 1862

I have a transcript of a newspaper article on the civil war history of Monroe. It doesn't mention any battles in 1862, although the town was used as a supply point and recruiting and training center from early on. Here is an excerpt that discusses a Texas division.

During 1863 Gen. Paul 0. Hebert was in charge of operations in Northeast Louisiana and occupied quarters in Monroe. It was during this time that two of the many skirmishes fought in the neighborhood took place in Monroe. The two encounters with the enemy here were on August 2 and September 3, 1863. Earlier in the year before the two attacks on the city Lt. Col. Fremantle of the Coldstream Guards, British Army, visited Monroe and later wrote an account of the military occupants in his journal.
"May 10 (Sunday) On approaching Monroe we passed through the camp of Walker's Division (Gen. J. G. Walker) which was 8.000 strong and on the march from Arkansas to meet Banks (Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks). The men were well armed with rifles and bayonets, but they were dressed in ragged civilian clothes. Universal confusion reigned there (Monroe); it was full of officers and soldiers of Walker's division and no person would take the slightest notice of us. In desperation I called Gen. Hebert to find us lodging. The enemy's forces were at Delhi, only 40 miles distance."

I will be glad to forward the rest of the article if you are interested.
