July, 1862 is the time period of the first Union naval assault on Vicksburg, Miss. Admiral Farragut tried to shell the city into surrendering, because he did not have the ground troops for a proper seige. Confederate troops were probably send to Monroe to protect supplies in that city from an incursion from the Union Fleet. Farragut's attempt failed and he retreated down the river.
