Re: Diary of 1st Sgt. H N Connor

Richard

With reference to the 1st Sgt H N Connor CW diary, I did speak to Dr. Haskell Monroe, who was attributed by W T Block, Jr. as the owner of the Connor Civil War diary. Dr. Monroe, formerly a Dean at Texas A&M and later President of the University of Missouri, indicated that he has never heard of the Connor Diary and knows nothing of its origin or location. He knew of W T Block, Jr., the diary editor, because Dr. Monroe grew up in the Beaumont, TX area, but he had no dealings with Mr. Block.

The outcome for me is that the H N Connor diary information credibly is highly questionable, at best, unless the location of the original, handwritten diary can be located. Assuming that the diary exists and that Mr. Block had access to it, he made an error in the attribution of ownership.

I have e-mailed W T Block III to see if he knows anything of the diary, its survival or location.

Thanks again

Don
