Glenn,

A friend of mine, Patrick Marquis, sent me this information concerning the black flag.

There is one Quantrill related flag that still exists. It was dropped during the raid on Olathe, and it is owned by the Kansas Historical Society. It is a small flag measuring only 13 inches by 9 inches, and it might have actually been used as a guideon. In the middle of battle, they were used to mark the line, and after the battle you could see were to reform. But if they did use them I believe it was only
ever in the War, because they would have had trouble hiding a flag when posing as non-combatants. It was pictured in Hale's book and I have a museum quality copy of it. Also, Kit Dalton's book is full of a lot of hot air, he tries to inflate his own importance in every instance hey (there is always one in every crowd.)

There is a second flag this same size that is black with a Red Saint George cross on it, which some people say is a symbol of it was recently sold from a small museum. Legend says this flag was made by Susan James and given to her future husband Alan, so I guess this might be considered as "A Black Flag." Also I know there are references in Andy
Walker book say a couple Yankee units actually had a black flag.

Hope this helps you.
