flag talk
In Response To: Re: thank you very much, Rose ()

Rose,
You may have seen this already but if not here is an interesting link to the flag mentioned by Patrick Marquis.

I called KHS today and spoke to the curator. The writing on the canton intrigued me. It looked like "...ank" and I wondered how many "Franks" were on the Olathe raid (thinking of Frank James, of course). I'm not so sure about the use as being a "Bible Flag." Soldiers often carried personal flags. The curator said that the inscription is actually "Quan" which would also make sense. I'd suspect this was a personal flag (not necessarily Quantrell's himself) or a tent flag or such, not a battle flag, but it nevertheless is definitely associated with Quantrell.
I was given "Under the Black Flag" years ago by my oldest son and have yet to read it but all this talk about Dalton has gotten me interested. It is now my summer project and is a fascinating book, flamboyantly self-serving, but really fascinating. On page 90 his description of John Brown is classic and I really need to work that into my history classes. page 94, he does relate that "Jim Lunn...was the black flag bearer." in the Lawrence raid. I won't take it as gospel but it is definitely an interesting account.
KHS has two other Missouri flags taken from town squares by Kansas troops.
