From Mayme Lucille Hamlett, A.B., B. S. "Place Names of Six
Southeast Missouri Counties" Thesis Univ. Missouri 1938
Pg 129 is: Niggerwool Swamp (Pemiscot) An area of low swampy land in the e. part of Braggadocio T. in the overflow region of Little River. It was named from the colloquial expression: "The grass is as thick as nigger wool." Louis Houck says that J. H. Morley, superintendent of the I. M. RR in 1852, first used the derisive term when he had difficulty in securing the right of way for his road through the swamps.

Pg 182 Treasure Island (Dunklin) A small island in the e. part of Clay T. formed by the flood waters of Little and St. Francois Rivers. It was called Coon Island by early settlers and hunters who found many racoons there. In 1905 land promoters attempting to find a more attractive name in order to encourage buyers, named it Treasure Island.

Pg. 62 Elk Chute (Pemiscott) In the w. part of the county. This body of water was a chute only in seasons of high water when the entire section of the county was cut off by this stream which joined the Mississippi River and thus formed an island. The name Elk was given because this was the feeding ground of elk.
