The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Col.Philips report on Indian Troops

Leonard,

You may want to visit the Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board http://history-sites.com/cgi-bin/bbs53x/itcwmb/webbbs_config.pl and post this information. You are correct that the 1st Battle of Newtonia, MO included large numbers of Union and Confederate Indian troops. In fact, the 1st Choctaw & Chickasaw Regiment, under Col. Tandy Walker, probably "saved the day" for the Southerners in the early phase of the battle and some of the heaviest fighting occurred on the Union left, Confederate right between the 1st Choctaw Regiment (Folsom) and the 3rd Indian Home Guard. Most consider the Native-American soldiers as mounted raiders, but in this case, at Prairie Grove and others, the Native Americans, especially the Chickasaw and Choctaw proved themselves to be stalwart infantry. I have always thought, especially on the Confederate side, if the Native-Americans (especially the Cherokee, Choctaw and Chickasaw) had been armed and supplied a little better they would have been outstanding troops and could have defended the Indian Territory against Union invasions. Unfortunately, the Confederate commandery never support the Indian Territory troops and the one large shipment of arms and equipment, meant for them was captured at Vicksburg.
