I wasn't suggesting using the data to establish a movement of wealth from Missouri to Kansas. My suggestion was geared towards identifying the post-1860 Jayhawkers, and then backtracking into the census to see if they were indeed poor in 1860. Your thesis seemed to be that they may have been doing what they were doing during the war because of poverty. The 1860 census would help establish whether specific identified Jayhawkers were indeed poverty-stricken in 1860, which, if true, would lend support to the theory that their 1861-1865 actions might have been motivated by their adverse economic circumstances.
