Good points Keith you know your stuff! Its fair to say in many irregular conflicts there tends to be a lot of fragmentation of leadership with different folks with different political view points wanting to go their own way. John Brown considered himself to be Gods special instrument so he would not make a good follower. One day I will have to read Foxs account of the 7th Kan. I didnt know that there was a major shake up of leadership. From what I know the 9th Kan at least per their OR did a good job hunting down Quantrills men after the Lawerence Massacre or Incident depending on ones viewpoint. I dont know what Kan unit would be considered the best anti guerrilla unit. I would suppose the Kan troopers would be very well motivated to fight in Mo vs troopers from other states although some USvs from other states did seem well motivated.
