Re: Kansas Poverty and Jayhawking

Thanks, Leonard. I think there is some truth to what Feldman said, but it is certainly not the whole truth, and it is not true at all when it comes to jayhawking. Take a look at some of the more prominent jayhawkers:
o Montgomery from Ohio, via Kentucky and Missouri
o Jennison grew up in Wisconsin
o Lane from Indiana
o Brown and sons from Ohio

A particularly interesting jayhawker is another one from Kentucky, Bill Anderson. Yeah, that's right, before he was Bloody Bill riding into Lawrence with Quantrill he was a Kansan launching raids against Missourians.

There were probably some New England abolitionists in the ranks of the jayhawkers (they were a diverse lot, since the name denoted diverse activities), but I am drawing a blank right now. Governor Robinson was a chief representative of the New England Emigrant Aid Society; he denounced the plundering ways of Lane when war broke out. In fact, Robinson claimed he and his home were spared in the Lawrence raid because Quantrill and his men had respect for honorable enemies such as himself.
