In the mid-'70's, I attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. I lived in a Murphysboro, Il apartment complex. My next door neighbor, an elderly gentleman, told me of a supposed Southern Sympathizer Riverboat Captain who lived in Jackson, County, close to the mouth of the Big Muddy River, where it flows into the Mississippi. He said that the Captain and his daughter departed the for the south, soon after the Civil War began. I searched Jackson County, IL census from that period but could not determine occupations, least not one of a riverboat captain. It has always intrigued me, and I wondered if anyone on the board had a guess as to what his name might have been, or, how I could begin a search for him and where he lived?
Thank you...
