The Spelling of Logan H. Ballou's last name
In Response To: Re: Bushwacker Logan H. Ballou ()

Now that I have seen three spellings of Logan H. Ballou's last name, I wonder why that might be. The name when landed in America in the 1640's, was Ballou. The family oral history is that those who moved south tended to spell their name Ballew. There were other variations, including Blue, Bilyeu, Ballow, Belew, etc. as time went on.

I wonder since the northern Ballou's were throughout the Union military, and that the name was somewhat familiar, that when Union forces heard of Logan Ballew, (Ballow) that they instinctively spelled his name, or, that perhaps, after the war, in an attempt to distant himself from this northern Ballou kin, he changed his spelling to Ballew.

It would really help if I could get my hands on those early histories for Carroll and Chariton Counties, along with census, property and other records to see if there was a deliberate name change by Logan Ballou after the war.

Thank you all who provided me with information to further research this interesting Confederate.
