re-interrment of soldiers

My ancestor was a member of Company C Fifth (old) MSM Cav. mustered in from Rock Port MO March 1862. He died in St. Joseph on 15 Ap 1862 (measles). I am assuming he was buried at the camp (then Fort Smith?). I have read on the web site for Fort Leavenworth that "In the years following the Civil War, the bodies of Union soldiers from St. Joseph, Kansas City and Independence, Mo., were re-interred at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. " sometime around 1868.

Is there somewhere I can confirm this information? I have called the cemetery but the person I talked with said they had no soldiers from St. Joseph there.

Any further information or tips will be greatly appreciated.
