Re: re-interrment of soldiers
In Response To: Re: re-interrment of soldiers ()

Thank you Maggie. I have visited St. Joe a couple times, most recently in October. I know that some soldiers from his unit are buried at Mt. Mora. However, I do not believe Loyd Bunyard is buried in a marked grave in St. Joe. I visited the library on Felix St. but found nothing. I did not have time to visit the Genealogy library on Felix nor the Historical Society. And those are probably the places that could help. I am interested in the information on a "Civil War era cemetery in the southern part of town" as I do believe Loyd may have been buried at the hospital or at the camp which was at that time Fort Smith atop Prospect Hill. Perhaps this is the cemetery of which you refer.

I would really appreciate anything additional concerning the Civil War cemetery. According to the Fort Leavenworth web site: “In the years following the Civil War, the bodies of Union soldiers from St. Joseph, Kansas City and Independence, Mo., were re-interred at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.” This was in 1868. I feel if I can confirm this, this is probably as close as I can come to what happened to my ancestor. Like so many who died of the measles and other contagious diseases during the war, I think he may have been quickly buried in a common grave. Perhaps these are the soldiers later moved to Fort Leavenworth.

Any assistance you can give is greatly appreciated. I would love to find out more.

Pat
