Pat,
The information about a Civil War era cemetery comes from a story told me by a local amateur "historian". The cemetery was located immediately north of what is now Garfield Avenue which runs along the railroad tracks that skirt the south side of the old part of St. Joseph--south of Patee Town. There are "keep out" signs posted on the area now. From what I've heard, several years ago, dirt was being removed from that area for use in a building project and some remains were unearthed. Until now I've really had no reason to pursue the issue...but, I'm hoping one contact can give me more information... This area would be a fair distance from the Fort Smith site. Give me a couple of days to see what I can come up with.

Prior to the City of St. Joseph taking over the Fort Smith site, the St. Joseph Archaeological Society excavated the area for three consecutive summers, and I am happy to report that we found NO human remains. During the years after the civil war, however, the Fort Smith site was corrupted by construction of dwellings in that area. In fact, by the time the Archaeological Society started working the site (in 2004 or 2005), about half of it had been dozed off and leveled years earlier. That would be the area directly north of the park they are building on the south end of the original site (which is still considerably higher than the surrounding area).

Since I am acquainted with some members of the Genealogical Society, let me check with them and see if we can find anything there. Nothing I love more than a mystery!
Later...
