By the way, I enjoyed your 1994 anthology of Arkansas Civil War essays, "Rugged and Sublime."

I agree with Rose that the most famous fight at Lamar was Quantrill's ill-fated assault upon the courthouse in November 1862. There was also a fight there February 19 or 20, 1863, and a couple more in 1864 that wrecked what was left of the place. The Union garrison at Lamar was isolated out in that prairie country, and vulnerable to sudden attack. However, I am not familiary with a fight there or near there "before the summer of 1862." My material is catalogued not by place, but by date and personalities, so if you could give me hints about who was involved or a better idea of a date, I will see what else I have. More clues may help.
