Bruce,
Thank you for the reply. I am from Joplin, so I feel for Buffalo.

I know for certain that John Y. LeMasters (LaMasters) died in actioin in Lamar in November 1862. I have several entries from MO Cavalry records that I have copied off of the Fold3 website, and I have photocopies of many of them that my great-grandmother had found in her research from the 1980s. Some of the records date the death 6 November, others 5 November.

"Killed in action, Nov 6, 1862, Lamar, MO" - (Signed Rosenbaum)
"Killed in Battle, Nov 6, 1862, Lamar, Barton Co, MO" - (Final report dated 1865, signed Posey)
"Killed in action with the Enemy at Lamar MO. Nov. 6-62." - (Signed H.R. Brandon?)
"Nov 5-62, Killed in action.' (on back of a record)
"died Nov 5, 1862" Casualty Sheet
"died Nov 5, 1862 at Lamar, Barton Co, MO" - (Casualty Sheet: Signed Ja R______illis?)
"Nov. 1862. Las__ Nov. 5 Lamar Barton Co, Mo. Killed in action by the Enemy." - (Signed Drynton?)

Since the historical records point to the fighting on the 5th, "killed in action" makes me think he died on the 5th, though he may have been one of those who died of their wounds after the battle. I would assume then he was probably buried in Lamar on the 6th. My great-grandma said she found some record that he was buried in Lamar, but she could not find the location.

Here is a chronology from the records I have found:

2 Aug 1862 Enlisted in Buffalo, MO
2 Sept Absent on detached serices until 31 OCt 1862
3 Sept Promoted to Sergeant, Co I, 8th Reg, MO Cav.
12 Sept record at Springfield MO (thohe I assume he was not there based on 2 Sept entry)
15 Sept Left Camp to visit family without superior's permission (my gg-grandfather had just been born)
10 Oct demoted to Private for insubordination (for being AWOL)
30 Oct sent to escort train until 3 Nov. (I am guessing this was the wagon train that Quantrill attacked on 2 Nov, but that is just a guess).
5 Nov Killed in action in Lamar, Barton Co, MO.

As he was sent on a detachment, he may have beein in Lamar on his way back to Springfield or on his way to Arkansas.

I can email digital copies of the records to you if you are interested. I would appreciate advice more expert than mine to piece together the clues.

Thanks,
