Thank you for the ideas of where to look. The only thing I can add to this is that John Y.'s son, John Henry LeMasters (who was born just before Sgt. LeMasters went AWOL, thus being demoted to pvt.) lived near my grandmother's family until his death in 1940 and occasionally told stories of his childhood. He, of course, would have had to have heard the story from his mother or older siblings, but my great-grandmother always told that John Y. "was killed by Quantrill's gang in Lamar." Word-of-mouth family tradition is not completley reliable, but is often not far from the fact. If I find anything more, I will post it here. If you should run across anything, please let me know.
