The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: To Terry: POW Executions I missed

Having read your follow up in this string, I am not surprised that you have found very little to nothing involving McNeil or others in NE Missouri. It is consistent with much of Missouri involving that period of 1862 and onwards. In the case of McNeil, I have found next to nothing except references, e.g. in his court martial held at St. Louis after the Price Raid the Judge Advocate makes references to his Order Book's showing a history of disobedience to orders. Nothing more. However, McNeil was found not guilty of all charges brought against him by General Pleasanton. If memory serves there were six military districts in Missouri commanded by a Missouri State Militia General of which not one order book has ever surfaced. After the war these books were sent to the War Department and later used to write the OR volumes pertaining to Missouri. After that they are buried in the archives or quite likely destroyed. I know that the Department of the Missouri Order Books exists and have never been transcribed. Therein lies much material that would answer many questions.
