Capt. James H. Barnes

I have stumbled over another account in the confederate Veteran in which my curiosity is aroused as to what the article is talking about. In VolXXII pg. 19, 1914 a Herman G. Keil seeks information: "The Killing of Capt. James H. Barnes"

Herman G. Keil, of Washing D. C. (543 Kenyon Street N. W.) desires to hear from survivors of the commands of Price, Marmaduke and Cabell serving in Franklin Co., Mo. from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, 1864. He writes: "As a contributor to the history of Franklin Co., Mo., I am preparing a record of the killing of Capt. James H. Barnes by part of the 55th ____ (here I am assuming he means 55th EMM. TJ)regiment on the night of Sept.4, 1863. Barnes was born in Virginia about 1809.

First in my mind was if he is talking about a killing in 1863 why is he asking about men Prices expedition in the area in 1864. Then who was Capt. James H. Barnes. As to the 55th EMM, this is one of those units I have no knowledge. Finally, I checked the history of Franklin Co., for which I have limited accesss, and find nothing on either man.

Anyone want to give some thoughts for this poor soul venturing through the confederate Veterans magazines.
