Fold 3 has the entire story of his arrest on malicious charges and subsequent release and then the statements from the 55th EMM C.O. and trial papers of his murderers. Interestingly this all drug on until 1914! ( at which time it was disposed of due to most of those involved being dead I suspect.) Clearly there were some local Franklin county men that had it out for him as early as late 1861. He was well known in the area even by a member of Co A 55th EMM who provided a character witness to obtain his release in July '63. From all appearances this was a murder without military cause or order, likely due to a personal grudge and the war provided an excuse. Not the first and Im sure not the last.
