This is helpful. I have been able to determine that, first of all, my family reused names a lot! Herman C. Gehlert who was born in 1847 was the nephew of Herman C. Gehlert who was born in 1827.

The Herman C. Gehlert who was a lt. in Regiment 55, Company C was born in 1827 and died in 1906. He would have been 36 in 1863, which fits. He was married to Sophie Fielder and was the father of Louis Gehlert, who was Sheriff of Franklin County.

It almost seems as if this group of soldiers made a pact not to tell who fired the fatal shot that killed james Barnes. Not sure how Herman ended up taking the rap for it, though. A lieutenant would not have been the lowest ranking militiaman in the group, would he have?

Thank you....Sarah
