See this archive thread. It appears that Barton and Trollinger were killed on the Shy farm by a fellow named Adams. There is some conjecture that Barton was a sometimes southren guerilla.

Apparently Trollinger and at least one William Webb and 2 others the names of which I cannot ascertain were involved in the murder of a man named Morgan on the JH Shepard farm in 1862. Trollinger was arrested several times through out the war and if Barton was running with him it is easy to see why they may have been a target of Adams in 1865 as the war was winding down.

FWIW, Maybe with the Trollinger connection someone else may be able to fill in some of the gaps.
