Why "Iron Brigade" for Shelby?

I've been poking around in various texts for an explanation as to why Shelby's cavalry brigade was known as the "Iron brigade" and specifically when they were bestowed with this appellation, but have not yet stumbled across it (or I've overlooked it.) It seems a reasonable term for them, but when specifically was it first used for Shelby's brigade, and why/by whom?
