Re: Why "Iron Brigade" for Shelby?

Jim McGhee seems to have put the correct interpretation on the matter of when Shelby's Brigade became known as "Shelby's Iron Brigade." I have transcribed all of the records of the men in the regiment and Shelby's order books, communications and etc. From Shelby there were no references to such a designation, however it would seem that a few period southern newspapers took up the title to counter the Unions famous Iron Brigade. Edwards, who ejoyed a reputation for romanticising about everything, undoubtedly created that image. In the early days of the Brigades organization there was no way it could be classified as a hard corp unit, there was too much denssension in the regiments. A matter that Marmaduke, Shelby, Edwards or any of the other senior officers did not want to talk about. Shelby himself posted a record of names whom he classified as 'Cowards.'
