John Charles Tracy was born c. 1825 in Clark County, KY, probably the son of Noland and Winifred (Fletcher) Tracy. He died Aug. 18, 1884 in Halifax County, VA, and is buried on his farm near Whitlock, VA. Prewar farmer in Columbus, Johnson County, MO. Also lived in Lafayette County and in California prewar. Mex War veteran.
Missouri State Guard service as Lt. Col., 3rd Regiment Infantry, 8th Division, MSG, elected 6-19-61. Slightly wia Wilson'c Creek. Enlisted in 5th MO Inf CSA 2-5-62 and made a quartermaster. 6-4-62 authorized by General Hindman to raise a regiment in MO. Led that unit at Lone Jack. Commissioned Colonel, PACS, 11-10-62, to raise a PACS regiment in MO. resigned 3-13-63 due to ill health. Married Mary Alley (Brandon) 6-2-1864 Halifax County, VA and lived there the rest of his life.
The key sources are his widow's applications for Indian Wars Pension (while in CA he served in a volunteer unit fighting Indians) and Mexican War Pension Apps. Plus his CSA staff CSR.
