Of more interest is letters that Babb wrote to his family after his capture, as well as this letter regarding his death from Martin Flynt another member of the Company.

Martin C. Flynt's Letter to the Parents of Joseph C. Babb April 4, 1863

April 4th 63
Mr. R.F. Babb,
Dear sir. By request of J.L. Newnam I take the liberty this morning of writing you a few lines in regard to the death of your son Joseph. I was at the hospital myself when Joe died although I did not see him. I received a letter from Newnam just a few minutes before I left the Island requesting me to get Joe's Bible for you. I went to Jesse Kentetzer who was Joe's nurse and who belonged to the same Co. that me and Joe did, he told me that he did not know what had become of the Bible. It had got lost by some means. he also told me that he saw Joe give the Stewart of the hospital it just a few days before he died. as to Joe's being prepared for his death i haven't the least dout myself as Joe was always a very good boy. Kenetzer says the night preceding his death he was awakened from his sleep by the prayers of Joseph. he went to him & asked him if he wanted anything he said not but he wanted him to tell his father and mother that he was willing to die. As Mr. Newnam has gone on the exchange he requested me to write you this letter which I know would be a great satisfaction to you to know about the death of one I loved almost like a brother. nothing more but remains yours.
Martin C. Flynt

Babb appears to have enlisted to Capt. Pursell's company in Boone County (home) on Aug 3 1862 listed as Captured Camden County Nov 10 or 15 1862. He died in Small Pox hospital Feb 28, 1863. Lt Col Brochit (sp?) EMM is given credit for the capture.

As the letter above indicates Jesse Kanatzer was also in the Small Pox Hospital being enlisted at the same time and place as Babb. He is listed as captured Boone County Oct 30, 1862. The last entry I find for him is a rather terse Guerrilla Pursell's band transfer to Alton, Il Jan 30 1864 having been sentenced by Military Courts for execution of sentence. I find it telling that in late 1862 he is clearly identified as being part of a regular Unit Co L, 1st NE Cav late 1863 he is identified as a guerrilla in Purcell's band even though he was in prison or hospital the whole time.

Martin C Flynt appears to have mustered with Babb as well in Boone Co Aug 1 1862. He was captured Miller County Nov 17, 1862 with 3 unnamed others by Capt. Hart EMM. He was exchanged City Point VA June 12 1863. He then pops up as a Srgt in Co G 1st and 3rd MO Infantry Captured at Nashville and released March 5 1865 at Franklin TN. He refused oath, stated his mother owned 3 slaves and a brother had been in rebel army and discharged. The examiner stated he was a "determined rebel and sharp". He reported being in a skirmish about 3 miles from Morris Mill ( MO), didn't fire his gun.
