Family reunion yielded info of relative, Alonzo Ellis of Winston County, MS, who "was killed in the Civil War". Internet research and MS service record show Alonzo J. Ellis in 5th MS Infantry, Co. F. Company F was mustered from Winston County, so a match seemed likely.

Alonzo Ellis was said to be killed in the Battle of Franklin, and a search of the roll at McGavock Confederate Cemetery shows a Sgt A.J. Ellis of MS Co F buried there, but the regiment is listed as the "15th".

We visited Franklin, TN, and placed a flag on the designated marker.

I was wondering, is the regiment listed in error? I know the bodies were reinterred in 1866, and time may have made the regiment designation unclear (probably carved into wood and buried with body?).

My question is, is it likely a misdesignation of regiment or is it possible that he went from the 5th to the 15th? Both were present in Franklin. If the 5th is accurate, I would like to replace the marker with an accurate designation and update their records.

Also, is there any detailed history on the 5th, including diaries, letters, photos or any other sources of information?
