The "Lest We Forget Roster" being compiled for the regimental history now being written shows the following:

Co. H. 7th. Miss

Ellis, Alphonso Pvt. WIA at Murfreesboro, TN; discharged 4-11-63[Hadskey research](4-16-63 per Calvin Phillips research); born Winston Co.

Ellis, E. M. Pvt.WIA Murfreesboro; discharged at Atlanta; from Winston Co.

Ellis, J/G. D. Pvt. Co. K 1st Miss; to McCarters Cav. Co.

We know that men from the 1st Miss. were placed temporarily in Co. H in March and April of 1862 because they were either sick or on leave when the remainder of their regiment was captured in KY. Most of these men stayed on the roles for records and pay purposes. They were assigned to Co. H because it was so depleted by deaths, injuries from the train Collision in Ponchatoula in February, and sickness in general. This Co. [H]of the 7th did not participate fully or at all at Shiloh. They did become active in the picket assignments from April until July 1862 when they left with the rest of the army to Ky. Most of the men from the 1st returned to the 1st in October 1862 after the battles of Munfordville and Perryville.

We know the 5th Miss. was in Chalmer's Brigade at Shiloh and wasstill attached to the brigade through the end of May because they were included in the action on the Monterey Rd on May 28th with the 7th Miss. and Wheelers Ala Regt. It is very possible that Ellis could have changed regiments at that time and stayed on until after Murfreesboro. The rest of the 5th also fought at Murfreesboro.

The best way to prove that these are the same men is to pull records from the 1st, 5th, 7th, etc. Good hunting. Keep us posteed so we can add your family info to our records.
