Re: 5th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, CSA

Hi Brian,

I can confirm for you without much doubt that the Alonzo Ellis buried in Section 25, Grave 58, was a member of the 5th Mississippi, Co. F, Lowrey's Brigade. All of the men in Section 25, with the exception of Henry Clay Shaw in Grave 46, were members of Lowrey's Brigade. There are certain patterns that emerge when you look at how the men were buried in the cemetery. In this case they seem to have been reburied in much the same fashion that they were exhumed, and probably much the way they were originally buried after the battle. For example, Section 24 concludes with some of Featherston's men and continues in Section 25 to include Shaw. Then Lowrey's men fill the rest of 25 and carry over into Section 26 before it goes back to a few of Featherston's at the end.

I recently had a book published about the Battle of Franklin and am currently working on my second book about the McGavock Cemetery. If you have any questions let me know.

Eric
