Re: Champion Hill "re-enactment"

Well, I will be travelling 769 miles to attend this event, a commeration to the soldiers that fought and died here. I had a number of ancestors that were in this battle and I've plenty of letters and diaries from other soldiers that served with my relatives that had written accounts of this battle and I want to "be there" for them. At the Gettysburg reunions when the veterans were still alive, they would "reenact" Pickett's charge; whether they were in fact in his division made little difference as was the case with those federals at the copse of trees. What they were in fact doing was honoring all the men, north and south that had given there service and lives for the causes they believed in.
In Illinois, when they have a reenactment of a battle, little care is taken as to which way any battery is facing much less an entire brigade and I can understand a certain amount of factuallity being considered at Champion Hill but I hardly think the soldiers who fought and died here would care much as to which way Hovey's guns were placed. I don't. I am so very happy to be able to walk the ground they fought on, that is my quest. Perhaps when one lives so near to a place, one can afford to be particular. 769 miles at $4.45/gal, the cannon could be reversed for all I care. I want to tread on the soil that my ancestors did. I know the troop positions from reading books and studying maps and I am okay with incorrect interim battery positions. If this was a permanent marker I'd have issue but it is not, it's a dedication to an event.
That is my $274.83 worth of opinion (the cost of gasoline for this roundtrip)
