Re: Buchanan of 1st Miss Inf (Johnston's)

His record in the 11th contains a tangle of webs including two cryptic remarks. See:

Gabriel J. Buchanan, age 25, 3rd Sergeant**, Captain William H. Moore's Company (Van Dorn Reserve), 5th Regiment, 1st Brigade, Mississippi Vols.,* joined for duty and enrolled April 27, 1861 at Aberdeen, Miss., by Capt. Reynolds for twelve months, appointed Sgt. Maj. May 4, 1861, detailed May 4, 1861 [Dosen't explain what??], appointed Adjutant 1st Mississippi, ca June/July, 1862, the Regimental Return of November, 1862, dated March 3, 1863 under remarks: "Signal Corps.", Regimental Return of December, 1862, dated March 3, 1863 under remarks: "Brig. Comy Dept.", recorded as a Private receipting for pay July 16, 1863

* This company was successively designated as Captain Moore's Company, 5th Regiment, 1st Brigade, Mississippi Volunteers, and Captain Reynold's Company, and Company I, 11th Regiment Mississippi Infantry
