Re: Buchanan of 1st Miss Inf (Johnston's)

Dave --

There are five different military sources of information for Gabriel J. Buchanan. These are --

1) 1st Mississippi Regt (Johnston)
2) 11th Mississippi Regt.
3) Signal Corps
4) Confederate General and Staff Officers
5) Miscellaneous Cards and Slips

Signal Corps records show Buchanan being paid for service from Sept 22, 1862, through Aug 31, 1863. The service file for Buchanan include wonderful letters written by Col. John M. Simenton concerning the death of Adjutant Gilbreth F. Simonton and his desire to have Buchanan replace him. We also have General Roddey's letter of Dec 12, 1863, asking for Buchanan on loan to replace Lieut Hugh Kirkman, captured near Huntsville, Ala., Oct 12, 1863. Kirkman had been acting as Roddey's AIG.

Buchanan appears on roll as AAIG on Roddey's staff as late as July 3, 1864. At some point Buchanan returned to his regiment and appears in different North Carolina hospitals. He was returned to duty on Mar 31, 1865.

Gabriel J. Buchanan appears in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census of Monroe County MS. On Mar 13, 1866, he married Maggie Moore in Monroe County MS. They have two children on the 1870 census, but unfortunately Buchanan's age is listed as 85. Whoever transcribed the census mistook age 35 for age 85.
