I knew Mt. Vernon was in that vicinity because men from there and Citronelle used to commute to Ingalls in Pascagoula, when I worked there in the 1970's.

I know that there was a riverboat disaster on the Alabama River in late July early August 1862 because the men who came down the Mobile & Ohio with Bragg's Army wrote about it. Don't know where it happened, or if there were injuries, but many men did drown in the accident. So the river was also a source of transportation. Hopefully, the gentleman will give us more details. The armory and proximity to the Alabama River may be the clues. A little mystery now and then is good.
