Alan, I have studied the Confederate war effort to some extent or another for over 40 years. Though I have delved into Confederate military law here and there, usually only when it was directly relevant to a particular instance I was studying at the time, it has never been a huge interest of mine. In those cases I normally researched only what was relevant to the issue, and the relevant time. (you are quite right about Confederate military law changing quite a lot over the course of the war)

Most other places that I "hang out" online, I am considered an "expert" on the Confederacy, if not "the expert". I pretty much run into no one that has a clue about Confederate military law...and when they do it is normally "what they heard" or "what they assumed".

[Here at this board I usually feel quite inadequate and humbled by the huge amount of knowledge that exists here now, and the knowledge of the men who have since moved on or passed on (Art Bergeron, Fred Cox, and a couple other awesome guys)].

I would go so far to say that less than 1/4th of the "fans" of the Confederacy actually know anything at all about Confederate military law, and that is a quite conservative guess.
