Re: 17th Mississippi Cav Battn

Eloise --

I'm working on several projects now, one of them being yours. You'd probably be satisfied with a simplier answer than the one I will offer. However, other people will be interested in this command and its successor, the 9th Mississippi Cavalry. My response cover all of it. When it's ready, my response will include information about each of the companies that joined that regiment, including four from Major Abner C Steede's Battalion which interest you.

For what it's worth, during research this weekend I learned the identities of Companies "I" and "K", which were not from Mississippi. Evidently they joined to fill the regiment's complement of ten companies. Learning who they were came as a complete surprise because both had been ordered to report to a recently organized Alabama cavalry regiment. At the end of the war names of officers and men from these two companies did not appear among other paroles issued to members of the Alabama regiment, so I had no idea what became of them. Now I know at thes urrender they were with Col Miller in Alabama.

Thanks for your inquiry! If I had not started down this road, the mystery of what happened to these two companies might not have been resolved.

More later....
