Camp Vance Morganton, N.C.

My paternal great-great-grandfather, David Land served as a private in Co.I 13th N.C. infantry. His CMSR has him " enlisting " at Camp Vance on Feb.14,1864. He was a farmer, born about 1825, and by 1864 he and his wife had 7 children. Their home was in Wilkes County. I don't believe the 13th had any companies from Wilkes. I don't believe they had any companies at all from the western mountain counties. Would I be correct to assume he was a " conscript ? " There is nothing about it in his record. I understand Camp Vance was a training camp for Confederate conscripts. Does his record say " enlisted " because he voluntarily came in on time and they didn't have to " come get him ? " How much ( if any ) training did he receive before joining the regiment ? I'm trying to determine the battles he would have taken part in. The 13th, late in the war, was part of Scales Brigade, Wilcox's Division, A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps Army of Northern Virginia. He apparently made a good soldier. He was promoted to corporal in Nov.1864. He was captured April 2, 1865 during the Petersburg breakthrough. Held at Hart Island,N.Y.till June 19-20,1865. Family " oral history " says he " walked back to North Carolina barefoot " If anyone can answer any or all these questions I would greatly appreciate it.
