The father of my maternal great grandmother was Jackson C. Simmons. In early 1862 the Confederate 3rd Maryland Battery was assigned to A.W. Reynolds brigade and recruited in Knoxville. There were several east Tennesseans in this unit and Jackson joined them. .
He was paroled at Vicksburg and returned home and apparently decided the Southern Confederacy no longer needed his services. I suppose he " hid out " till July 1864 when he joined the Union 3rd Tn.Mounted Co.F at Greenville. He served his 90 days and came home. Drew a Federal pension for his service. Seems he went to church with several former Rebels who were fine with his Yankee service till he got his pension. Jackson said he lost his hearing while he was a Federal soldier from standing guard two nights in a row during a rain & hail storm. Said he he took a severe head cold that settled in his ears and over the years he lost his hearing. His former rebel church members contacted the pension commissioner for the area and told him Jackson lost his hearing while a gunner with the the Confederates at Vicksburg. They temporally got his pension revoked but later recanted, apologized, and publicly repented in Church and Jackson got his pension back. My cousin has a copy of his pension and part of the testimony is former Confederate and Union folk saying they considered Co.F of that regiment no more than a " organized band of outlaws " LOL !!!! I had some distant kin in the Thomas Legion. The book about them " Storm in the Mountains " is a great read. Also had some Land cousins from Monroe County,Tn.
where John C. Vaughn was from and Union Colonel Devine of the 3rd mounted was killed I believe. Good to hear from you again to.
