Thanks James, Kirk's raiders also burned down the place I believe in the summer/fall of 1864. I wonder how much ( if any ) actual training conscripts like my gr,gr,grandfather received ? His 1st cousin , James Calvin Land was a Lieut Colonel in the home guard. ( 93rd regiment from Wilkes County. ) Wonder if he may have also been the county's conscript officer ? That might explain how my gr.gr,grandfather made it till Feb.1864 before he had to go. Looks like he still managed to get to Virginia in time for Grant's Overland Campaign and some of the War's bloodiest fighting though and ended up on Hart's Island.
