From what I can find it "maybe" phosphorous mixed with carbon bisulphide. Exposed to air, the mixture bursts into flames. I also found a letter from a manufacturer that claimed he cound project the flame, like a flame thrower, and wanted to use it against the Confederate ironclads on the James River.
