Chase, I was raised in North Georgia, where there were very few slaves, nor many large plantations. The last time that any of my family had any slaves was in 1824, in Forsyth County. Farms in our area were too small, and families too big, for them to really need slaves, yet thay all went to war for their homes. Just north, where the mountains were higher, there were more unionists. There were a couple of units raised in the mountains who fought for the union, and more who went over into Tennessee and joined union units there. In 1864, General Wofford was at home in Cassville recuperating from wounds. He wanted to return to the ANV, but Davis ordered him to stay in Georgia and take charge of the irregular units roaming the country, preying on both sides. In June, 1865 he surrendered about 7000 men at Kingston. Thereafter he worked for the betterment of the local citizens, gathering forage and food for them and their animals, with the help of the union troops in the area. He was a lawyer and newspaper owner. He had organized the regiment my folks were in, the 18th Georgia. They fought as part of the Texas Brigade at Gaines Mill and Antietam, where Wofford commanded the brigae, Hood having been promoted. They were in the cornfield. They fought at Chncellorsville, Fredericksberg, and Gettysberg, where they were in the Wheatfield on the second day. My GGF died at Seven Pines; one great uncle was captured at Sedar Creek; the other at Roswell, Georgia, while recovering from a serious wound. He was a tCamp Douglas for almost a year. From time to time I have wondered which side I would have chosen back then, but would probably have did what they did, for much the same reasons. I am glad now that we can discuss and remember those days without too much rancor. Anyway, I have friends in Ohio and relatives in Indiana. Stan
