I am not familiar with that particular instance, nor the timelne. It is just my beliefe that Pemberton had a chance of defeating Grant in the last Vicksburg campaign, which I believe would have for the most part removed Grant from the war. When the moment was lost to hand him another defeat, the war was for the most part over. Just my POV, Grant was the best Union General in the field.
